Our free Crypto Tax Check gives you a quick orientation on whether your crypto activity in Germany is taxable at all. You answer a few short questions about your activity over the past year, for example whether you sold, swapped or paid with crypto, and whether you received staking, mining or lending rewards. Based on that, the check shows you which tax rules apply to your case.
For private investors in Germany, the principle is: not every crypto activity automatically triggers taxes. Whether a taxable event occurs depends on what you did, how long you held, and how high your gains or income were. The check helps you place these points in the context of your situation. Your individual circumstances may differ, especially with a large number of transactions or commercial trading. Use the result as a first reference point, it does not replace individual tax advice.
There are broadly two areas to distinguish. First, disposals: if you sell crypto, swap one cryptocurrency for another, or pay with crypto, this can count as a private disposal. The holding period is decisive here. A sale or swap within one year of acquisition can be taxable, while gains are usually tax-free once the one-year period has passed. In addition, an exemption limit of €1,000 per year applies, if it is exceeded, the entire amount can become taxable, not just the portion above it.
Second, crypto income: rewards from staking, mining or lending generally count as other income and are taxed as soon as they are received, at the market value on the day of receipt. A separate exemption limit of €256 per year applies to this, independent of the €1,000 limit for disposal gains. Simply holding, on the other hand, triggers no tax.
The check gives you an initial orientation on whether and where you are affected. For the actual amount of any tax, you need the next step: a full review of your transactions. How much tax applies in an individual case can be estimated with the crypto tax calculator, and a tax-office-ready crypto tax report requires your complete transaction history as its basis.
With Blockpit you can import data from exchanges, wallets and blockchains, review transactions, add missing information and calculate your results under German tax law. This lets you organize gains, losses, income, fees and holding periods in a transparent overview and prepare the information you need for your tax return, either yourself with the software or with support from the Blockpit Expert Service. Portfolio tracking is free.
This check is for informational purposes only and does not constitute tax advice. The tax treatment depends on your individual circumstances and the rules applicable for the respective tax year.
